Simple Exercises to Ease Mental and Physical Strain while Flying in an Aeroplane

Written by: Sandeep Sinha - Scientific Poet of the 21st Century

Traveling on a long flight can be physically as well as mentally tiring for passengers. Even if you are a frequent flyer, you still feel the agony of traveling long distances. With little space to stretch your legs, sitting for several hours causes lower backache and stiffness in the neck and shoulder regions. These problems can be well-managed by doing simple exercises in the plane.

Walking is the best solution to allow normal blood circulation, which usually gets affected by sitting on the chair in one posture. Although the space is limited, you can still walk in the narrow passage inside the plane. Do not be shy to take 5-6 rounds; you can walk about 300 meters by taking 6 rounds - assuming that the distance from cockpit to tail is 25 meters. The muscles in the leg also get stretched after remaining tense in the sitting posture. Also, you may raise your left leg in such a manner that the thigh is at a right angle to the calf; hold the left leg in this position for 5 seconds, and the right leg should remain straight. Repeat the procedure by raising the right leg while keeping the left leg straight.

For relaxing the neck and the shoulder, there are two simple exercises. The first thing here is to find an isolated place - the area at the rear, before the washroom is sufficient for this purpose. For the first exercise, raise your shoulders slowly till they touch the ears. Then hold the shoulders in this position for 5 seconds. Thereafter, allow the shoulders to come down slowly to their normal position. Repeat the process 5 times. For the second exercise, tilt your left side of the neck till the left ear touches the left shoulder; hold for 5 seconds in this position. Then bring the neck to its normal position. Repeat the process with the right side of the neck. Do these exercises for the left and the right sides of the neck - 5 times each.

While sitting, you can stretch your calf muscles by bending both feet toward the shin. Hold in this position for 5 seconds. Then allow the feet to come back to their normal position. Repeat the process 5 times.

These simple exercises will avert physical or mental strain while traveling in an aeroplane.

Have a nice journey!
