Wholesale Markets of Old Delhi

Written by: Sandeep Sinha - Scientific Poet of the 21st Century

Traders from all over India throng the various wholesale markets of Old Delhi, which sells almost everything from a simple stitching thread to embroidered apparel. Some of the popular markets in Old Delhi are: Chandni Chowk, Nai Sadak, Chawri Bazaar, Hauz Qazi, and Sadar Bazaar.

The shops in Chandni Chowk are famous for selling clothes for all age groups and gender. Indian women like to buy the traditional sarees and salwaar kameez, while men like to buy traditional kurta pyjama. There are some jewelery shops to selling necklaces, earrings, and bracelets in gold, silver, and other metals. Pearl beaded jewelery is also a specialty of this market. Since Indian marriages are celebrated with great pomp and show, families of bride and bridegroom do their shopping from Chandni Chowk.

The Nai Sadak market has shops selling books for schools and colleges, office stationery, and computer accessories. If you cannot find a book anywhere in Delhi, then you will most probably find it at one of the bookstores in the Nai Sadak market.

As you walk further, you will reach a T-section - the other perpendicular road at the T-section has the Chawri Bazaar market, which is the wholesale market for selling customized wedding cards. There are several shops specializing in printing of wedding cards. The wedding cards may cost from Rs 5 per card to as high as Rs 1000 per card - the higher priced wedding cards are placed in elegant boxes.

The wholesale market of Hauz Qazi sells hardware products for the construction industry. You can find local as well as branded products in this market. Both consumers and traders buy hardware products for bathroom and kitchen needs from this wholesale market.

Another popular wholesale market in the Old Delhi area is the Sadar Bazaar, which has shops selling toys, kitchen utensils, electronic goods, gifts and souvenirs, packing products, etc.

Although the wholesale markets of Old Delhi are crowded, they are worth visiting because you can save considerable money by buying goods from these markets in contrast to the retail shops scattered all over New Delhi.

Happy shopping!
