The Golden City of Jaisalmer

Written by: Sandeep Sinha - Scientific Poet of the 21st Century

It is a delight to watch the city from the Jaisalmer Fort, which is a castle made of yellow sandstone. Even the houses are made of yellow sand, if not from the precious yellow sandstone. When seen on a sunny day, the city has a lustrous, Golden-yellow look. Under illumination, the luster reflects from large sandstone structures and sand-built houses. It is due to this Golden luster reflecting from each of the building structures that the city of Jaisalmer is also called the Golden City.

Jaisalmer is a majestic city in the western state of Rajasthan in India. It was established around 12th century by a Rajput ruler and witnessed many battles, like the kings in those times were known to show off their power by expanding their territories by waging wars against each other.

The city is popular for its Jaisalmer Fort that also houses a palace and temples. The fort overseeing the city is situated on a ridge and provides a panoramic view. It is one of the must-to-see places for a tourist, whether from India or abroad.

Jaisalmer is the starting point for a trip to the nearby sand dunes of the Thar Desert. These apparently endless sand dunes need to be mentioned in the list of 7 Wonders of the World. There are camel safaris to take you for a ride to the sand dunes. When you disembark from the camel and wander in the sand dunes, make sure you know the returning point because it is easy to get lost in these rolling sand dunes.

Enjoy the adventure!
